Notes for Dog Owners

by MaryMoppet 1st May 2016

Dog Licences

All dogs aged six months or more must be licensed each year under the Dogs (Jersey) Law 1961. So we recommend anyone thinking about getting a dog in Jersey to visit gov.je and make yourself famililiar with their section on 'buying a dog licence'.

Each licence is specific to one dog and can't be transferred to another dog.

Control of Dogs in Public Places

Being a dog owner in Jersey comes with certain obligations. Your dog must wear a collar with details of your name, address, and contact number when they are on any public place or road. You may be fined if fail to provide one for your dog(s).

You are also required to clean up after your dog. Failure to do so can lead to a fine of up to £500. This applies to all public areas, including roads and pavements as well as all beaches and parks

Stray dogs should reported to the parish office of the parish where the dog is found. If unidentified the dog will be taken into care and the owner will have to pay for collection and housing costs (a minimum of £65 per dog) once claimed. Those which remain unclaimed after seven days will be re-homed or sold. If you have lost your dog, a lost dog report should be reported to your parish representative.

Beach Restrictions for Dogs

During the winter months (1 October – 30 April), dogs are allowed on any beach at any time without a lead, however, during the summer months (1 May – 30 September), dogs on a beach must be kept on a lead between the hours of 10.30am and 6.00pm.
