Most students take 30-40 hours of professional lessons, aided with some hours of private practice

Manual licenses allow you to drive both vehicle types, where an automatic license strictly limits you to automatic cars

What are the eyesight requirements?

You should be able to read a modern number plate from 20 metres (roughly 5 lengths), with or without glasses.

Can I practice in my own car?

Yes, provided you have a valid provisional license, are accompanied by a correctly qualified driver, and hold correct learner driver insurance

What are the waiting times for theory and practical tests?

Both appointments can be booked on the DVS website in advance. Generally 3-4 weeks wait for the theory and a 4-6 weeks for practical tests. Practical car test lasts around 40 minutes.

What are the practical test, ‘show me’ , ‘tell me’ questions?

Examiners will ask two safety related questions during the practical test.

What is a ‘tell me ‘ question?

This is asked at the very beginning of the test before you start driving, where you verbally explain a safety check. Example : explaining how to check engine oil level using the dip stick.

What is a ‘show me’ question?

This is asked while the car is moving, where you must operate a secondary control. Example: demonstrating how to demist the front windscreen or clear the rear window while keeping control of the car.

What are common practical failures?

Improper lane discipline, changing lanes or direction without proper mirror checks or failing to signal your intentions. Observation errors, not looking effectively at junctions, roundabouts or merging zones. Speed management, driving too fast for the conditions, exceeding speed limits or driving unnecessarily slow
