A volunteer will answer

If you phone us, we will answer with something like "Samaritans, can I help you?"

 

You talk, we listen

We listen to you and help you talk through your concerns, worries and troubles

 

We won't tell you what you should do

We won't make decisions for you, our advice or opinions are not important for the call

 

We give you space to be yourself

We'll focus on your thoughts and feelings, and may ask questions to help you explore how you feel.

What happens if you call Samaritans?

We would always want to help you to explore your feelings about your situation and to help you make the decisions that are right for you. We will ask you questions when talking to you to help you do this, and to make sure we understand what you are telling us.

Will I speak to someone locally?

116 123 is a National number. You will be put through to the next available volunteer from any one of our UK branches.

Can you see my phone number?

We have no idea of your number, who you are or whereabouts you are ringing from.

What happens if I have no credit on my phone?

The number 116 123 is free to call from both landlines and mobiles, including pay-as-you-go mobiles.

Can I ring if I am not suicidal?

Absolutely. If you are in any sort of distress we are there to listen.
