About this Event

This guided intertidal walk heads south-west from Green Island towards La Sambue, a prominent reef surrounded by extensive sandbanks and a lagoon that appears at very low tide. The route lies within Jersey’s internationally protected Ramsar wetland, which stretches along the island’s south-east coast.

Participants will cross gravel channels, shallow pools, tidal streams, shingle and exposed sand as the tide retreats. Along the way, Lou Wagstaffe will introduce some of the organisms that survive in this demanding habitat and explain how they cope with being exposed between tides.

Weather and tide conditions permitting, the group will pause on the main sandbank for exploration and refreshments. There may also be an opportunity for a brief swim in the lagoon, but only where conditions are considered safe.

Highlights:

  • Guided walk led by Lou Wagstaffe
  • Access to the La Sambue sandbanks at an exceptionally low tide
  • Exploration of tidal pools, streams, gravel banks and exposed seabed
  • Introduction to locally adapted intertidal wildlife
  • Views along Jersey’s south-east coast in clear weather
