Volunteering is a great opporunity for growth, education and making new connections.

Whether you're a visitor or a local, getting involved in projects is a great way to see what a country has to offer. Below is a list of Jersey charities that will interest those looking to get involved with organisations helping animals.

Cat Action Trust 1977 Jersey

Cat Action Trust 1977 Jersey branch is committed to aiding feral and domestic cats in living full, happy and safe lives, free from diseases such as FIV (feline aids) and FeLV (feline leukaemia). They look to do this by paying and organising for neutering, feeding colonies of neutered adults and finding homes for them wherever possible. You can donate or volunteer your spare time by contacting Cat Action Trust 1977 Jersey.

DURELL Widlife Conservation Trust

Through the preservation and breeding of endangered species, DURELL Wildlife Conservation Trust strives to promote conservation of wildlife throughout the world. Projects are completed both in Jersey and the animal's natural habitat. Volunteers are required to assist by guiding and informing visitors, helping with educational activities, preparing animal food, general office duties, and working on the organic farm. To see about volunteer opportunities, contact the Trust.

Guide Dogs for the Blind Association

The volunteers at Guide Dogs for the Blind Association work to raise money for Guide Dogs in Jersey (mainly through book sales). They have a team of volunteers that collects books all year round in preparation for two booksales – the paperback childrens' book sale (April) and Biggest Book Sale (October) at the Royal Jersey Showground in Trinity.

Jersey Aquatic Discovery

The team at Jersey Aquatic Discovery aim to encourage an appreciation, awareness and understanding of all aquatic life. They strive to promote conservation and sustainable use of marine and freshwater resources by current and future generations. Among other opportunities, they ask you to volunteer from home by collecting standardised data that can be used for analysis in national databases. See the website (link) for further instructions.

Jersey Bat Group

The point of the Jersey Bat Group is to survey and protect bat populations, roosts, hibernacula and foraging sites in Jersey and provide information and education regarding bats to the Jersey community. The group welcomes anyone with an interest in bats to join. They hold regular meetings and run a summer survey of the Island's roosts.

Jersey Greyhound Supporters

This group aims to find loving, permanent homes for retired racing greyhounds by promoting the awareness of the qualities of greyhounds as pets. All animals are spayed/neutered and vaccinated before rehoming. The group of supporters also provides a back up service to all owners for any questions or concerns.

Jersey Junior Dog Handlers Association

This association aims to educate both adults and children on how to be responsible dog owners. Weekly training sessions are held at Royal Jersey Showground in Trinity. School itineraries cover obedience and show handling.

Brooke Hospital for Animals

The Brooke is an international animal welfare organisation dedicated to improving the lives of working horses, donkeys and mules in some of the world's poorest communities. Established in 2001, fundraising is achieved mainly by hosting events, the largest being the annual Musical Soirée at Samares Manor in July. They also attend events hosted by other organisations to sell home produce and a large selection of gifts.

Paddy Powell's Animals in Need

Paddy Powell's Animals in Need seeks to provide treatment for animals that belong to the elderly and may have difficulties paying for the treatment required.

Jersey Hedgehog Preservation Group

The Jersey Hedghog Preservation Group cares for sick, injured and orphaned European hedgehogs under professional guidance and releases them back into the wild. As experts in the field, they try to increase public awareness about hedgehogs and the problems that they face. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact the Group directly.
